Australian Tourist Miraculously Survives 111m Drop as Bungee Cord Snaps
An Australian woman touring Zambia and the Victorian falls faced a near death experience when she went bungee jumping at the Victoria Falls bridge.
The jump is 111 metre deep and Erin Langworthy, 22 years of age nearly lost her life when the bungee cord snapped midway through her jump. She crashed face first into the water with her feet still tied to half the bungee cord.
The Zambezi River which borders Zimbabwe and Zambia is known for its crocodile infested waters and its dangerous rapids.
The horrifying scene was captured on video by a person at the jump using a mobile device.
Following the jump Erin was dragged towards the rapids but had finally managed to swim to the Zimbabwean side of the river where she hauled herself onto land.
Erin suffered a fractured collar bone and bruising and was rushed to a hospital in South Africa.
Erin being interviewed by Australia’s Channel Nine stated that she definitely thinks it was a miracle she survived the jump.
"It went black straight away and I felt like I'd been slapped all over," she told her interviewers, “The water was going quite quickly and then I started to hear the roaring; It was quite scary because a couple of times the rope actually got caught on some rocks or debris," she said.
Given Lubinda the Minister for tourism in Zambia told Lusaka Times that the bungee jumping equipment has always been safe with over 50,000 tourists using it every year, “It has been in operation for 10 years. This is the first time I am hearing of an incident. The probability of an incident is one in 500 000 jumps," he said.
