Nigerian task-force uncovers arms cache

Nigeria’s special Security Joint Task Force (JTF) has confirmed that a large arms cache has been discovered in the northern state of Kano.

Security officials say that the recent discovery will go a long way in combating militant group Boko Haram and countering the threats made by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta (MEND).

During a briefing on Wednesday at the Defence Headquarters, the Director of Defence Information Col. Mohammed Yerima confirmed the discovery of the arms and ammunitions in Kano and claimed that authorities acted after receiving a tip-off.

"Acting on a tip-off by well-meaning Nigerians, the joint team of Police and Army in Kano State discovered a large cache of arms and ammunition in one of the residential areas of Kano," Yerima said.

Some of the items found included AK47’s, assault rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, tear gas canisters, passports and police identity cards.

Separately, Yerima said that JTF Operation Pulo Shield, tasked to investigate MEND in the Niger Delta, have successfully identified the suspects involved in the recent Agip pipeline attack.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday said that Nigerians are tired of the bombings in their country and that his government will work swiftly together will state security apparatus’ to bring those responsible to justice.
