AU talks ‘useful and frank’ - Zuma
South African President Jacob Zuma has described the recent two day African Union (AU) summit, held in Benin, as ‘useful and frank’.
President Zuma returned from the AU meeting on Sunday, which was convened by the organizations newly elected Chairperson, Benin President Boni Yayi.
According to the Ministry of the Presidency, the meeting held in Cotonou from 18-19 February, was a consultative meeting with African heads of state.
The Department of International Relations and Co-operations (DIRCO) said that the meeting dealt with, “the implementation of the decisions of the AU Summits, exploring mechanisms for capacity building within the AU, continental economic integration and political unity.”
This was the first meeting since the 18th Assembly of Heads of State and Government which was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
At the January meeting in Ethiopia, President Yayi of Benin was elected as Chairperson of the continental organization, as part of its rotating chair policy.
DRICO also confirmed that President Jacob Zuma stopped over in Angola on his way back to South Africa. The Foreign Ministry says that Zuma held talks with Angolan President and Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson, Jose Dos Santon in Luanda.
