Southern Sudanese Community Celebrates New State
July 9th is historic day in the life of south Sudanese, as they attain their independence from Sudan.
Mary Akeer is originally from South Sudan but now lives in Uganda. She is grateful for an independent South Sudan. "We thank God because he has given us our country that we love. Its children and women, we are going to our home," she said.
Tabitha Apou is another South Sudanese resident in Uganda. She echoes Akeer's sentiments. "We thank God we are free at last. We have lived as refugees in camps but now we are going back home. Thanks to John Garang and US President George Bush."
Apou has high hopes for an independent South Sudan. "We have wanted independence so that we can attain education. Now we will take our children to school and we women will go back to school to learn English," she said.
Ajout Charles was born and grew up during the civil war in Sudan. He has a message for all those who fled the country during the conflict. "All Sudanese people’s liberation movement who are still sweating should come home. Things might go back to the worse. We have no tarmack roads, health centers. The government of South Sudan was just taking the oil and not addressing these issues," he said.
William Ador Miabek, Head of Mission Government of South Sudan Liaison Office in Uganda has appealed to all South Sudanese to collaborate. "Finally we got the country, this is what we have worked for all these years, from our grandfathers, and our grandchildren will see our struggle. Let us come together and build the country. People who are in South Sudan are very few to do the development, the government alone can’t do the development."
South Sudan has been at war with Khartoum government for decades. In 2005, a peace agreement was signed, and in January this year, a referendum was held in which 99% voted to secede South Sudan from Sudan.
The flag has been raised, the anthem has been sung, amidst jubilation as southern sudan community in Uganda marks the new state.
