More than 60 reported dead in Syria
Activists say more than 60 people have been killed in Syria today as government forces moved against regime opponents.
At least 30 deaths are reported in the central city of Homs (hohms), where Syrian gunners pounded rebellious districts. At one point, shells reportedly rained down at a rate of 10 per minute.
A raid by government forces in a mountainous region of northern Syria left more than 30 others dead.
One activist tells The Associated Press that government troops have been unable to advance on Homs because of stiff resistance from military defectors inside.
Residents say food and water are running dangerously low in the besieged city.
The Red Cross is trying to arrange a daily two-hour cease-fire so that it can deliver emergency aid to the wounded and sick.
Russia, one of Assad's remaining allies, urged the United Nations to send a special envoy to Syria to help coordinate security issues and delivery of humanitarian assistance.
