More than 50 killed in 2 days of turmoil in Syria
The violence in Syrian appears to be escalating dramatically. Activists say more than 50 people have been killed in the past two days as forces loyal to President Bashar Assad shelled residential buildings and fired on crowds. Much of the violence was focused in Homs.
The head of the Arab League observers in Syria says the violence has spiked there and in two other cities central to the uprising.
The observers are in Syria to monitor a League plan to end the country's 10-month-old crisis.
The mission has been widely criticized for failing to stop the violence.
Meanwhile, French diplomats say the U.N. Security Council will discuss the crisis in Syria during an unexpected meeting today.
The U.N. says at least 5,400 have been killed in a Syrian government crackdown on civilian protests.
